Title: Tokyo Bumps HD.
Post by: Athias on May 27, 2011, 10:59:58 AM
First off, let me start by saying that I love adult swim bumps, particularly the ones in HD. Since I have a high res monitor (1920x1200), the HD bumps look great. I wanted to know if you can or are planning to release the bumps, with images of various areas of tokyo at random times of the day, in HD? Like in a v2 style? Examples would be:

1.http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/1819 (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/1819)
2.http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/58 (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/58)
3.http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/1803 (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/1803)

The first two are by Yesterday's New Quintet, and the others by Psyche Origami. I know these bumps go way back to 2004, but I use to enjoy looking at them right before an anime would start like Fullmetal Alchemist (original) or Samurai Champloo. These days I don't have the time to watch much tv with work and life in the way so I'm glad you guys bring a little tv to our PC's. The SD's are fine, but they're noticeably different on my monitor. I'm fond of the HD bumps and ask if you'd please indulge this request. Thanks.

Well, we hadn't thought about it at all since we only post stuff that airs on TV. In theory it might be possible with some of those (the ones with high-res images... Minato-Ku doesn't have one, sadly), although I'm pretty sure we'd need to crop them a bit to maintain aspect ratio. Thing is, we all love the older bumps around here (I'm particularly more partial to those), but we have so few high-res images that I don't know if it'd be a huge improvement. It wouldn't be a good idea on bumps without high-res images since we'd only be upscaling, and they really wouldn't look that good. I'd previously thought of posting extended 10-second versions of most 5-second bumps but we decided against it for authenticity's sake... need more opinions, anyone else care to weigh in?

Makes sense. The ones of Shinjuku-ku and Fujiyama, as you mentioned, contain hi-res images. I think there are also a few more that also have hi-res images. And you're right, I agree that the more practical ones to release in HD are the ones with higher resolutions. I don't know... something about those images coupled with the music makes me feel nostalgic. All I can ask is that you guys consider doing the more pragmatic ones, and leaving at your discretion the less pragmatic ones or the ones that you simply think is just a bad idea. Thanks for the quick response, by the way. And, thanks for hearing my request.

I must say, I've thought about it all day on work; I'm a quality buff as well and HD versions sounded really great on theory. I completely understand the feeling of the music coupled with the images; bumps back then were really carefully made and they came out pretty much perfect. However, after getting home and giving a few of them a test run, I sadly gotta say that it wouldn't work at all. After resizing, they need to have 240 height pixels cropped to maintain the aspect ratio. Bumps like Adult Swim Subway lose a ton of little details, enought to affect the bump's impact, and Not to Be Enjoyed's framing after that doesn't make any sense and it just looks like a weird jumble of things thrown together. Even bumps like Fujiyama, which has a ton of empty space, look really oddly framed and just bad after being cropped. Framing on 4:3 and 16:9 is drastically different, and it's very apparent when redoing these. They really don't work at all, instead of looking artistic and well made they look really wrong. Not even Asakusa and Shinjuku 02:42 (which are letterboxed widescreen images) turn out well; the framing's pretty off. Sorry, but doing that would hurt the bumps a ton instead of enhancing them :-(

240 off the height? There really would be no point in doing it, then. It's probably for the best. Maybe these bumps were not meant for the HD era. Those images had a very earthen quality to them, like Adult Swim Subway--which until you mentioned, I have not seen in probably 6-7 years. Thanks for the consideration.

HD doesn't have to be 16:9 you know.  You can have 4:3 HD at 960x720 or 1440x1080.
As long as the bump is a static image and you have a high resolution image, you can make it HD.

True, but they'd be pillarboxed on playback or stretched out. It is a valid point, though.

You know, I've been thinking a lot about this ever since the comment was posted, and after watching the latest batch of new bumps I decided I just had to do something about it. I've been working on these in my spare time and yes, I made HD versions of the old bumps using the wallpapers, and even made HD upscales of the ones with lower-than-HD-but-acceptable images. Almost all of the bumps are here, except the ones that have motion and the Swim and Western one since the image quality is pretty terrible. I did have to crop the images, but I spent a lot of time on it so that none of the essential elements are cropped, and I think the results are pretty good. I even took the time to fix two images (Kill Your Feet and Don't Die), re-adding important stuff that would've gotten lost while cropping. Some of these work really well (like the Tokyo bumps), some not so much (like Making Your Future and the Zorak one), but the results are all watchable and enjoyable. I don't know if I was being headstrong or just severely dislike the new bumps (or both), but looking at these with fresh eyes I think they work. My bad Athias, and sorry for making you wait so long. Anyway, too much talky, here's the link to the pack:

http://www.mediafire.com/?odd1i3x9d1qdv2h (93.36mb)

(Included here are: Asakusa, AS Motel, AS Subway, AS Truckin', Chiyoda, Come See New, The Dawn is Your Enemy, Fujiyama, Ginza, Green Girl in Box, Making Your Future, Network Hub, Not to Be Enjoyed, Pink Lady in Parking, Punch Bay, When Did You Stop Remembering, Shinjuku 2:42, Shinjuku 7:16, Stubbs Line, White Barnish, WS Mills, You Can Be Happy and Zorak. Modded ones are Kill Your Feet and Don't Die. The Upscales are AS and You Boat, AS and You Parachute, AS and You Piano, AS and You Sailboat, AS and You Seal, Found in Austin, Mooninite Cloud, Rusty Car, Watch Our Stuff and Watch Our Stuff v2.)

Also, I severely doubt (I'm almost sure, really) anyone inside [as] will read this, but if they do, here's a message to them:
Guys, the work you do each and every week is really appreciated. I understand that coming up with fresh ideas every week is hell, and it's actually pretty amazing that you manage to come up with hilarious stuff so constantly. I also understand that even though I'd love it if the bumps were closer to the old style bumps, I'm not even a .1% reprentation when it comes to ratings and studies and stuff like that. My request is small; I'm not asking for the old bumps to be put on the air again... heck, I'm not even asking for new bumps in the old style. Just please bring back the wallpaper images and let us geezers have our hush-hush fun

Dude ...I'm overwhelmed. I almost teared when I saw these. And not just the Tokyo bumps but the old bumps I've taken a liking to--at your reference--since making this post. AS Subway, AS Motel, Don't Die, Chiyoda,  Fujiyama, Shinjuku, look amazing. In fact, everything looks gorgeous (that's a better word for it!) Honestly, thank you for putting the time into these bumps and offering them. And I agree with you in that appreciation is deserved to those on the AS staff who come up with funny and likeable material to air, and that they should let geezers like ourselves have fun with the old wallpapers. And appreciation is owed to you and work. This really does bring back old memories. I'm sorry I didn't notice and it took me more than week to say to say my thanks. Sincerely... thank you, mongo.

I'm really glad you guys liked them :-D It's really awesome to be around people that enjoy these bumps as much as I do. Makes me happy that you guys have enjoyed them, since it felt a little crappy that I took so much time to get to these. I hope someday we'd see at least more wallpapers; even if it takes a bit of time or something, I really enjoy doing this.

I wanna ask, have you guys at bumpworthy ever thought about creating fan bumps? Not to host on the site (maybe?) but for your own use?

Wow, I never new that thread existed. Thanks a lot for letting me know. I've taken a crack at creating bumps myself (mostly mimicking the tokyo bumps). I have found a higher resolution image of the tokyo tower and created an HD minato-ku bump. Can I post rapidshare/fileserve links or is it strictly youtube now?

I confess we're at a crossroad right now and the jury is still out ~ for now I'm going to say as long as you're making 10 - 15 second bumps (which is what they should be anyway) either is fine. That could change tomorrow at this point.  :| If you can guarantee that the entire bump is of your own original content (words, images, music) start to finish then you are free to post what you like.

For the sake of brevity, I'm going plead for common sense here and let everyone know that we will delete links that are deemed inappropriate.

This is supposed to be fun, damn it  We can pick up any further discussion in the other thread,  'kay?

Like Numy said, we are at a crossroads regarding a user bump sub-site, but please feel free to post on the thread! I've never had any problems with making 10-15 second bumps, even 30, just don't use the full song unless it's self-made. I'd love to see an HD Minato-Ku bump, really.

Of course. All the bumps I've created are 15 seconds (16 at most) long. I primarily use the sample audio tracks offered on this site.

As far as the HD Minato-ku bump, I've create 2 of them after some trials and errors. V2 is a 1080p alternate angle version of the Tokyo tower at night with the original Psyche Origami's Eye Detector on the audio track. V8 (haha!) I had to resize because the image is really huge (3000x4000). I tried my best to maintain the correct proportions while downscaling the image so the image wouldn't look to "stretched" when I cropped it to keep the 16:9 AR. It looks pretty much like the original minato-ku bump except that the tower is in the middle rather than on the right. Plus it's in HD (720p). Let me know what you guys think. Any criticism is welcomed.

Oops. Forgot that you asked me to post them on the other thread. Will do that now :-D
